Algoma University (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario)
About: Established in 1965, Algoma University is proud of their unique ways and it’s this drive that makes Algoma the right place for students, their future, their mark.
Students are looking for a university that understands them. A place that will leverage their career intentions and be their partner along the way. A university where faculty are ready to share their knowledge and convictions and direct students on the right course, and where graduates have carved a path to follow. From it's student-centred approach to learning, to one-on-one interactions with faculty, to the endless opportunities to get involved on- and off-campus. At Algoma, students have the opportunity to leave their mark on campus and make a difference in their community.
The spirit of sharing and coming together continues on Algoma's campus today. Located on the former site of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School, Algoma University offers a unique and historically rich setting for a cross-cultural community in which Anishinaabe (First Nation, Métis, and Inuit), Canadian, and international students and faculty learn with each other and from one another in a spirit of friendship and respect. They continue to uphold the Seven Grandfather teachings of wisdom, love, respect, bravery, honesty, humility, and truth.
Why Algoma University
- Student-centric: Classes are kept small to provide students with more opportunities to participate, ask questions, and receive quality feedback from caring professors. Algoma's professors are always available for help and have an open door policy, plus they will get to know their student's names and dreams and help in every step in reaching them. Further, learning goes beyond the classroom. Faculty believes in providing students with as many hands-on learning opportunities as possible to take what students have learned in the classroom and apply it to real life work situations. Professors prepare students for life after school.
- Campus life: Be a student leader, join a club, compete on a varsity team, or work alongside faculty on cutting edge research. The opportunities really are endless to get involved at Algoma. Students will meet new friends and these experiences will help build up their resume. Plus, their leadership and volunteerism on- and off-campus are recognized on the Co-Curricular Record. So why not get involved?
- Facilities: Grow and innovate at the LEED-certified Essar Convergence Centre which brings together teaching, research, and commercial activities in a dynamic atmosphere. Get physical at the George Leach Centre and workout in the gym or field house or participate in athletic activies like badminton, basketball, volleyball, or jog or walk around the indoor track. Relax at The Speakeasy, Algoma University's student centre that operates as a pub, patio, and entertainment hub. And don't forget about the Arthur A. Wishart Library which is an integral part of the overall academic experience, serving as the access hub to learning resources, and especially through providing learner-centered programs in research skills and information access.
- Location: Algoma U’s main campus is located in Sault Ste. Marie, a city of 73,000 people in Northern Ontario. “The Soo”, as locals call it, has all the amenities of a big city – shopping, entertainment, sports teams, festivals, and cultural activities – but without the hassle of traffic. How lucky to live in a city surrounded by the great outdoors. With Lake Superior and the St. Mary’s River literally just steps from Algoma's front door, there’s always something to do.
